你见过佛教徒用的念珠（佛珠）吧？标准的一串念珠有108个珠子。
这种念珠的英文可以简单说 Buddhist prayer beads. （bead就是珠子）
标准的说法是Japamala，或mala beads，或者就说 mala. 这是正式说法。
为什么佛珠有108个珠子？
有好多种不同的说法。我对佛教没有研究，不敢妄言。本文仅罗列几种常见的说法如下：
说法一：
有些咒语（mantra）要求念100遍，数一颗珠子念一遍，100个容易数错，就多加8个做备用珠子。
说法二：
梵文（Sanskrit）有54个字母，每个字母分阴阳性两种，所以就做了108个（54x2）珠子。
说法三：
佛教认为人生有108种烦恼（kleshas），或者108种欲望（wordly desires）。
