第596期：Rock the boat and rock the cradle
今天我们来讲三个英语成语，都跟rock有关。这里的rock不是岩石的意思，而是rock'n'roll（摇滚）里面的“摇”。

Rock the boat
小时候听大人说，坐船时不能站在船上晃，更不能说不吉利的话。假如有人在船上连蹦带跳造成船身摇晃，就会遭到所有人的批判，因为会导致翻船，危及全船人的安全。
英语中也有类似的说法，叫 rock the boat.
意思是 make trouble; Disturb a stable situation; cause trouble or problems in a stable situation; To disturb the balance or routine of a situation.
这个意思很好理解。
If you rock the boat, you do or say something that will upset people or cause problems. (-- Cambridge Dictionary)
例句：
None of my family members are fighting with each other right now, so please don't rock the boat by bringing up politics or any other controversial topics. 全家人现在都相安无事，不争不吵。千万别提起政治话题或者其他争议话题打乱家里的这种平静。
the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world
Cradle是摇篮，Rock the cradle就是晃动摇篮，哄婴儿睡觉。The hand that rocks the cradle（晃动摇篮的那只手）指的是母亲的手。
所以这句成语 the hand that rocks the cradle rules the worlds的字面意思说的是女性（母亲）统治着世界。
什么意思呢？
Women have a great power and influence because they have the greatest influence over the development of children.
Literally, it means that the mother who raises a child determines his/her character and future.
A mother has the greatest influence on a child’s growth, making him the next generation of virtues to rule/destroy the world.
纵观人类历史，一直由男性统治着世界。但再牛的男性，也是由女性（他母亲）生的对吧。
这句成语就表达了这层意思。在某些场合，也可以翻译成“妇女能顶半边天”，但并非总能这样翻译。
英语中有时候会简单地说the hand that rocks the cradle，省略后面的rules the world，大家就都懂你指的是女性。
这句成语出自美国诗人William Ross Wallace（威廉·罗斯·华莱士）1865年发表的一首诗：What Rules the World
诗人称赞母性是世界变革的杰出力量。

这句成语是不是很棒很美？
但今天我们要讲的第三个成语就没那么美了。
rob the cradle
字面是“抢劫摇篮”。
哇，什么人那么丧心病狂去抢劫摇篮偷人家的婴儿？！
To rob the cradle is to marry or date someone who is much younger than oneself. 原来指的是那些跟比自己小很多的人约会或结婚的人。
呃，这个话题嘛，有争议。
世界各国的传统观念其实都不太接受老夫少妻或老妻少夫现象，如果夫妻两人岁数相差太大，总会招来别人的猜测和议论。
不过，人各有志，人各有命，人家愿意，谁也管不了。
我们只讲英语成语，不评论这个社会现象。
Uncle Bill—who is nearly eighty—married a thirty-year-old woman. That is really robbing the cradle. 比尔叔叔都快八十了，娶了个三十岁的女人。这真是抢劫摇篮了。
